North Cape by night

By jj, 27 July, 2025

Climbing 750 meters late at night (steep climbs, not normal ones) and there I am, at the North Cape! At midnight.

To this first goal: 635km and 5930 meters climbed.

The North Cape is a place where things end but where the endless sea also provides space and time.
It allows me to say goodbye to my grandmother who has been gone for a week. Space to say goodbye to a way of life that doesn't bring happiness, space to say goodbye to certain aspects of myself and ample space to say hello to a new grand adventure that will start here, at the North Cape.

"One would think my journey ends here but in fact it is the very beginning."

If there is a North Cape, would there also be a South Cape? This question is too intimidating for now. I won't answer it. Not yet.

Back to the North Cape.
It's surreal. You occasionally see a dolphin surface 300 meters below in the sea. Combined with the red glow of the midnight sun, the mirror-like sea, and the gray colors, it creates an almost surreal effect. As if you're floating in the void.

The goal of leaving at night was to find a quiet North Cape and for the road to be peaceful as well. The road was indeed calm, but they still come here around midnight with busloads of tourists. Even now at 01:30, there's a scramble for a photo.

Now let's hope I can catch a ride or a bus; otherwise, I’ll have to climb 750 meters again during the night.
I’m still sleeping in the cabin and have my things there.
The plan was to cycle back at night too. I expected a 250-meter climb but didn’t expect this.

Update: the first bus driver I asked is Dutch. I can ride for free and put the bike in the hold.
She runs tours to the North Cape from Norway. I am extremely lucky!!! Leaving at 01:45.
